IBU Construction

In the class, we are being told to construct a big dome make of bamboo in the following construction weeks. The dome is believe to have 8meters tall. The only image come to my mind is it is very big! I also can imagine how it will be so amazing when it successful constructed on site. A person is impossible to do it alone. So we work together and each person do 1 or 2 struts. It have 5 sections and 5 color.

I am in section 2 and yellow color. Strut with yellow color have length 2.57m .
After class, my friends and I decided go to the site for cutting bamboo since the bamboo have been sent to the site.
I choose a thicker bamboo and measure the length it should have. Do mark. Afterward, started cutting..

A Vsit to Jewish Cemetery and Monument

New assignment: to produce a monument to leave for the future. For completing the assignment, we have a visit to Jewish Cemetery located alongside Jahudi Road in Penang. Normally a site visit is interesting but now it is a cemetery. Therefore, we have to bring heavy mood and take more serious altitude as to respect them in the resting place. The day we went there is on Monday and is a gloomy day. We are moving in group.

Let us touch a little bit about the history of Penang Jewish Cemetery.It was established in 1805, is believed to be the oldest single Jewish cemetery in the country. The oldest Jewish tombstone is dated July 9, 1835 dedicated to a Mrs. Shoshan Levi and is believed to mark the grave of the Enlish Jew that was the benefactor who donated the land where the current cemetery stands. Most of the graves take the form of a triangular vaulted-lid casket. There are approximately 106 graves located in the cemetery with the most recent tombstone dated 1978. My monument design is getting idea from long time ago the china write their words on the bamboo roll. Long time ago, before they create the paper and writing brush, they carve on the wood, bamboo or even stone. What I think is back to natural. The monument is make up of bamboo so i can carve some meaningful sentences or story on it. I hope that it make the people pass by learn something or get some idea.


Flower put into the bamboo container for decorating. It is more aesthetic if the monument is taller and larger.

Looking Backward

Review back about my life, I can remember that the 1st day I reach USM School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP), I was very excited. I heard before that university life is enjoyable and relax. However, I found out that it is different! If you don have enough patient and passion, it is really hard to survive in HBP. The 1st studio class give me a strong impression because the 1st assignment. I getting shock and a few stress after I know that we need to have a new blog and write our progress along the whole semester. I never try to write blog before and I am also a 'computer idiot'. Finally, I search for friend to help to register the blog. Even though it is quite hard for me to suit the early period of time, I feel happy because I learn something new and got know new friends.

On the continuous day, I started getting more busy until even ate one time a day. I started thinking about myself, I know that I didn't manage my time properly. About the assignment, I know that I have been try my best but I still need to read more to generate more ideas. I still can't reach the target that I satisfy. I hope to improve that in my future.

Review back about group work, I found out that I may lack of communication and negotiation and creative skills as what the Dr Sr Mastura have been say. During group discussion, normally it is hard to let other clearly understanding what your idea.

Time is passing fast, mid-semester program is finished, I have been listen a lot of lectures and done a lot of assignments. From 1st lecture of APEX Introduction to now lecture of Group Survival, I got lot of knowledge and thanks for those lecturers who try hard to deliver the talk and given advices. I gain new experience also from all the assignments like making mask, bamboo sound tool, black box.... and what I want to say is although HBP life is busy but it is fun. I can still survive here is the best proof for this.

Looking Forward

What I expect for my personal development in the future? I hope that I can manage my time wisely. I can complete all planned activities within the time planned. I still can take out some time for take care my health and carry out some healthy activities.

I can focus on my goal and always motivate myself to be success and make my dream come true. I can come out with creative idea and complete my task with satisfaction. Be innovative. I can think more and do more.

What I expect to contribute to the disaster during 2012? I hope that I am well prepare for that time. We have learn survival during studio. Started from earlier we have been done the second project about PONDOK, we know that basic requirement such as supply of food, drinks, medication needed for survive. However, is there just only prepare survival kit to save our own life, then after the event, we continue our behavior as before? After watching the video "Awakening As One", I get the answer. The disaster actually is the chance for us to think about it. It mainly deliver a message of unity and humanity. We can do more. We must change our altitude by not live for self from now. With unity, we can change the ending.

I hope I can let more people know the important of their responsibility and also I am physically and mentally prepare for that time.

Merdeka Countdown 2010

One day before Hari Merdeka, we have gathered at the Penang Times Square for merdeka countdown. There is another event here which is Youth Jam. The 1st time I heard that it was organised by only a 19 years old girl, I feel that it was amazing!! She is same age with me but she now can took up such a large responsibility to held a big event. I was so admire with her. Although there are not much audience but the performance are perfect. I can really saw them prepared hard for this event.
There are problem which out of my expectation when 10 minutes before the countdown. The condition can be say in state of confusion and disorder. We didn't given a time to perform our theaterette. Anyway, we are still fast to get into the situation and enjoy it. It is fun.






We are so early to reach there so I took the free time to sit with my friends and started to sketch the view. I have been sketched some of places in Penang Time Square.

Theatrette

We need to form a group of ten to produce a 3 minutes Merdeka Theatrette and powerpoint. We have been decide:

Merdeka: Rethink

There are lot of questions have been thrown out by Dr. Shardy regarding ' Are We 'Merdeka'.
He say,
Are we 'merdeka' when we fail to understand and respect the rights of others?
Are we 'merdeka' when we still implement the administration system that was founded and propagated by colonist or western countries?
Are we 'merdeka' when our teenagers throw out the babies like a rubbishes?
Are we 'merdeka' when our children have less respect to their parents?

Different people have different view on 'merdeka'. Some say it physically independent but some say it mean mentally.

In my opinion, it depends on individual. Those question is mainly about lost of moral quality, actually it happen anywhere. It talking about mind independent. If your mind is mature enough and be responsibility on yourself then you are independent. Therefore it is individual evaluation. If we say we fail to understand and respect the rights of others, then how about those who understand and respect the rights of others?

Anyway, it just a symbolic gesture to show that the British Empire has agreed to no longer rule reign over Tanah Melayu.

Survival Kit

What should we prepared for the disaster time? Survival Kit. This is the holiday assignment for us. Actually I was sick for these few days. Therefore, I feel hard to think and my mind is just like blank. I decided to make it structure not so complicated.

The USM invention that I use involve:
MultiFunctional Adhesive (MFA)
Lightweight membrane from Innovative and Novel Membrane Morphology Modification
Nanocomposite Epoxy Hybrid
Alumina Fiber
Compositionally Modulated Multilayer ( CMM ) Coatings consisting of Multiple Alternate Nanolayers of Yellow and White Miralloys

The Survival Kit that I design is like a micro building. The skeletal structure is made from bamboo sticks and joins by steel wire and MultiFunctional Adhesive (MFA ). Steel wire make the joint and MFA as reinforcement on the bonding not only can stronger the bonding but can prevent steel from rusting due to its high water resistance. After that, the structure need a roof like covering during a heavy rain condition. Lightweight membrane from Innovative and Novel Membrane Morphology Modification can become the material.



The structure is then tie on place on the floating box made from composite materials ( Nanocomposite Epoxy Hybrid ) contain Alumina Fiber as reinforced materials. Inside the floating box contains small boxes provide empty space to support the structure.



There have connection which can connect all the structure together to provide a large space. There are more comfortable and can support more people. It also can connect to Ibu. However, all the connection must coated with Compositionally Modulated Multilayer ( CMM ) Coatings consisting of Multiple Alternate Nanolayers of Yellow and White Miralloys. It increase the hardness, toughness and abrasion resistant. This is important to make sure the connection is good enough to prevent the survival kit loss.
